Baby Fruit Snack

I’m a little obsessed with Zavier’s food intake as his iron level is a little on the low side, and it would be great to bump those numbers up. I make it a point to plan his weekly meals to satisfy a variety of food/fruits and health benefits. I think it’s good to introduce him to different taste and texture so he’ll enjoy his food more in future. It does take some effort to plan, curate and prepare them! And after all the work, it takes effort to introduce these new food, without him giving me a face. I use these guiding principles to ensure he gets the essential building blocks necessary for growth.

Firstly, let’s talk about iron deficiency in breastfed babies. Babies have good iron storage for up to their first 6 months. After that this storage starts depleting, and if not careful, could led to iron deficiency. The best ways to keep those numbers up is to increase their fortified baby cereal, or to introduce meats to their daily meals.

Why is iron important?

Iron is important for the development of baby’s brain development from six months to two years. If the iron level is not at a desirable level, this can have effect their learning abilities later in life.

To boost iron absorption, it is important to include fruits with high Vitamin C in baby’s diet. These can usually be found in citrus or berry fruits. I personally stay off oranges, for now, and have been blending strawberries and blueberries for his mid-afternoon snack, along with fortified baby cereal.

I prepare fruits enough for two days, and store them in the chiller.

Simple Baby Fruit Preparation

I grab a handful of blueberries, wash them, and boil them over a saucepan with two tablespoons of water for 2 minutes, or until they look like they are about to burst. Put the blueberries into a bowl and use a fork to mash the berries up until they have a almost-smooth consistency.

Then I wash the strawberries, and hand blend them until it is smooth.

Once done, I pour into one bowl and sieve the pulp out. I consume the pulp (shouldn’t be much left). The last step is to store the fruits into a baby friend container, and serve for snack.
